Liver Lowdown


The American Liver Foundation is making national news on topics including liver wellness, disease prevention, screening and treatment.

Some highlights:

Dr. Jorge Rakela, associate director of the Center for Regenerative Medicine at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix and member of the American Liver Foundation’s Desert Southwest medical advisory committee, discussed 3D printing of livers and other human organs.


ALF national medical advisory committee member, Dr. Hugo Vargas, chair of the Division of Hepatology at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix and professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, was interviewed for NPR’s Morning Edition program about the cost of new hepatitis C medications and patient access. Air date to be determined.


Flavors of Connecticut was featured in a segment that aired on the station’s Better Connecticut TV segment.

Phil Scarfo, ALF’s national director of education and training and a transplant recipient, was recently featured in a profile about people living with liver disease.

Dr. Clark Kulig, member of ALF’s Rocky Mountain medical advisory committee, discussed the results of a study showing that giving up alcohol for one month had health benefits for the liver. The article will run in the next few weeks.
